When Crisis Strikes, We Act
In Uganda, communities — especially refugees and host populations — face a growing combination of humanitarian crises and environmental challenges. From sudden displacement to the slow-burning impacts of climate change, millions are caught between surviving today and preparing for tomorrow.
SHFA’s Humanitarian Relief & Climate Resilience program addresses both. We deliver immediate, life-saving support while building the long-term systems and skills communities need to withstand future shocks.
We don’t just respond to emergencies — we help communities move from crisis to stability, and from vulnerability to resilience.

Immediate humanitarian support
Food & Emergency Supplies
We distribute food packages, hygiene kits, and essential non-food items to families affected by displacement, conflict, and natural disasters. Our response prioritises women-headed households, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
Safe Shelter & Clean Water
We support communities with temporary and transitional shelters, alongside clean water access and sanitation infrastructure. Safe shelter is the foundation for recovery — without it, nothing else is possible.
Psychosocial Support
Displacement and crisis leave invisible wounds. We provide counselling, peer support groups, and community-based mental health services to help individuals and families process trauma and rebuild emotional wellbeing
Building resilience for the future
Climate-Smart Agriculture
We train farmers — especially women — in sustainable farming methods that increase yields while protecting the environment. This includes drought-resistant crops, soil conservation, water harvesting, and agroforestry techniques that build long-term food security.
Clean Energy Solutions
We promote access to affordable, sustainable energy alternatives such as solar lighting, energy-efficient cookstoves, and biogas systems. These solutions reduce reliance on firewood, lower household costs, and protect forests and natural resources.
Sustainable Livelihoods
We help families build income sources that are resilient to climate and market shocks. Through skills training, savings groups, and access to markets, we support communities to move from aid dependence to self-sufficiency.
Why humanitarian relief and climate action must go together
Uganda hosts over 1.5 million refugees — one of the largest refugee populations in Africa. At the same time, the country faces increasing droughts, flooding, and land degradation driven by climate change. These crises overlap and compound each other, hitting the most vulnerable communities hardest.bBy combining emergency response with climate adaptation, we help communities break the cycle of crisis and build a foundation for lasting stability.
